Transmission Problems: Early Warning Signs Every Driver Should Know
By Pablo Zaldivar · Junior's Auto Repair, Twin Falls, ID
Your transmission is one of the most complex — and expensive — components in your vehicle. A full rebuild can cost $2,000–$5,000 or more. But many transmission failures start as small, fixable problems. Here's how to catch them early.
Slipping Gears
If your car unexpectedly changes gears while driving, or the engine revs without corresponding acceleration, your transmission may be slipping. This is often the first sign of a problem.
Rough or Delayed Shifts
Normal gear shifts should be smooth and nearly imperceptible. If you feel a jerk, clunk, or hesitation when shifting — especially when going from Park to Drive — have it inspected.
Transmission Fluid Leaks
Transmission fluid is red or pink and has a slightly sweet smell. If you see spots under your car, check the fluid level immediately. Low fluid is the number one cause of transmission failure.
Burning Smell
Overheating transmission fluid has a distinct burning smell. This usually means the fluid is old and breaking down, or the system is under excessive stress.
Check Engine Light
The check engine light monitors dozens of sensors, including transmission solenoids. Don't assume it's "just an oxygen sensor" — have it scanned.
