Pre-Road Trip Checklist for Magic Valley Drivers
By Pablo Zaldivar · Junior's Auto Repair, Twin Falls, ID
Twin Falls is one of the best starting points for a road trip in the West. Whether you're heading to Sun Valley, Boise, Yellowstone, or south into Nevada, open roads beckon. But a breakdown 200 miles from home is no way to start a vacation. Here's what to check before you leave.
Fluids: The Foundation of a Healthy Drive
Check engine oil level and color, coolant level in the overflow reservoir, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. If anything is low or dirty, address it before departure.
Tires: Pressure, Tread, and Spare
Check tire pressure when cold — the correct PSI is in your owner's manual and on a sticker inside the driver's door. Check tread depth with a quarter: if you can see the top of Lincoln's head, you need new tires. Also verify your spare is inflated and your jack and lug wrench are present.
Brakes
If your brakes have been squealing, vibrating, or feeling soft, get them inspected before any long drive. Mountain passes and sudden traffic slowdowns demand a system you can count on.
Battery and Belts
Have your battery load-tested if it's more than three years old. Check the serpentine belt for cracks or fraying. Quick inspections that can catch a failure before it happens miles from home.
Lights and Wipers
Walk around and check all exterior lights. Replace wiper blades if they're streaking — you won't know how bad they are until you're in a downpour on the Columbia Gorge.
